Abu Dhabi - MENA Herald:

The idea of fake news has proliferated the media industry in recent times. In what has been termed a “post-truth society” politicians and reporters alike have been outed for pushing past the facts and appealing to the emotions of media consumers. In a world where even the most trusted news outlets have been called into question, the onus has shifted to the consumer to separate fact from fiction.

H.E. Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) shed light on this new wave of fake news on stage at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Majlis for Future Generations on October 8.

“We need to check our official resources when it comes to a piece of news,” cautioned Dr. Al Nuaimi. “Read everything wisely.” Media is created, he went on to explain, it is not simply a report of facts that are transferred to the public. Because it is created, it carries along with it the bias of its source.

Identifying and calling out fake news is a part of developing a global mindset and of the utmost importance for the future leaders and representatives of the UAE. “It is we who decide our priorities,” Dr. Al Nuaimi said. “Our battle is development, securing our future, and developing our people. Don’t wait to be a soldier serving your country, but be sure to defend what you know.”

Taking place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on October 8-9, the Mohamed Bin Zayed Majlis for Future Generations offers Emirati students a unique opportunity to meet and engage with the UAE’s culture, social, and technological leaders. For two days, local and international experts will share the expertise of today with the leaders of tomorrow.
