Smart Dubai Launches ‘Smart Decision-Making Platform’, Takes Visitors on Journey into the Future

Dubai - MENA Herald:

Smart Dubai launched the Smart Decision-Making Platform from its stand at GITEX Technology Week 2017, taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre on October 8-12.

The new platform relies on Dubai Pulse, the Smart Dubai data aggregator forming the backbone of the city’s transition into advanced smart technologies. Visitors can visualise the data through an “immersive room” that offers them a glimpse into the future of Dubai.

Titled “Future, Live”, the room allows visitors to visualise live, citywide data, making Dubai the first city in the world to share its real-time live data with the public, along with projections of the progress that is in the pipeline for the coming decade. A team of data scientists, designers and programmers, as well as various government entities, joined hands to build the innovative and custom-built digital infrastructure to allow for the display.

The unique and engaging interface was created using data mined from hundreds of thousands of data points around the city. It projects layers of information that provide visitors with unprecedented insights into Dubai’s smart city transformation and the many technologies, projects and initiatives rolled out by Smart Dubai and its affiliate organisations and partners to build the city of the future.

“Smart Dubai always puts people first in all of our initiatives,” asserted Her Excellency Dr Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr, Director-General of the Smart Dubai Office (SDO). “We have been working tirelessly to bring all of Dubai’s smart city services to life, and to use the extensive data that we have amassed to cater our offering to each citizen, resident and visitor in the emirate. Our display today at GITEX Technology Week offers visitors a glimpse into the future. The live interactive show feeds off of Dubai Pulse’s treasure trove of city-wide data, offering scenarios with three realistic characters reflecting actual residents of Dubai.”

“Visitors to our stand this year are in for a truly singular experience,” Dr Aisha added, “as they will be able to visualise our years of work in terms of data collection and storage. The data not only reveals Dubai’s exponentially rapid progress – which attests to the success of our efforts and, more importantly, to the soundness of our wise leadership’s vision – but also offers a glimpse of where we’re headed: visitors to the ‘Future, Live’ show can have a look at the city of the future we are working to build here in Dubai, in collaboration with government entities, private companies and academic institutions.”

The City Planner feature of the Immersive Room generates a real-time map, where visitors can view approximately 500,071 new developments across the city. The display also maps commercial areas, overlays them with electricity, water, utility and land usage data, as well as transportation data (such as metro usage over an average seven-day period) that helps identify potential infrastructure improvement hotspots. Visitors are tasked with choosing a new location for a metro station, using Gesture Control to switch between three pins that suggest the location for new metro stations based on power consumption, land development data and public transportation data.

The Entrepreneur feature, meanwhile, generates data based on estimates that Dubai will host as many as 200 million people by 2050, creating an increased demand on commerce will provide the opportunity for businesses to expand. Visitors are invited to put themselves in the entrepreneur’s shoes and use the live city data to select three new locations for their business to expand to. The interactive display loads licence registry data to identify shopping districts, overlaying metro and bus data to identify high footfall. Using Gesture Control, visitors can select an area to explore and implement their expansion plan.

Finally, the City Resident feature seeks to make residents’ lives easier. In this case, visitors are invited to explore how they can use city data to make an informed hypothetical decision to move homes with their family. In order to choose the best possible location, the display maps all residential areas across the city, overlays them with metro/bus data, cross-references them with school and hospital locations before finally factoring in property values. Once the system analyses all the data, users can use Gesture Control to explore the results.

As the official government body in charge of leading the city’s smart transformation, Smart Dubai is taking part in the 37th annual GITEX Technology Week. For the duration of the event,

the Smart Dubai booth will bring together more than 42 government and private institutions and will take visitors on a journey to the future, offering a vivid example of how Smart Dubai intends to build on its cooperative ties with government entities and the private sector in order to contribute to the UAE Centennial 2071.

Several high-profile organisations have pledged to sponsor Smart Dubai’s GITEX participation, namely, Darkmatter as Diamond sponsor; IBM, SAP, ATOS, d3 and DELL EMC as Gold sponsors; and Network International and Exceed as Silver sponsors.
