Dubai - MENA Herald: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) received two awards at the Asian Smart Cities Awards 2015, which was organised by the Asian Leadership Summit, and held at Taj Dubai Hotel in Burj Khalifa, under the theme 'Asian Sustainability Pioneers'. Many of Asia’s top public and private organisations took part in the ceremony, where many initiatives and projects were nominated.

DEWA won in two categories, ‘Smart Utilities Initiative’ and ‘Smart Technology for Smart City’. Jamal Al Hammadi, VP of Special Projects and Marco Janssen, Director, Smart Grid PMO, received the awards on behalf of DEWA.

“In line with the Smart City initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest city in the world; DEWA is implementing three smart initiatives namely 'Shams Dubai', 'Smart Applications via Smart Grid and Meters', and 'Green Charger'. We are delighted with this recognition, which celebrates our progress in smart infrastructure for electricity and water," said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Al Tayer observed that the smart grid initiative is a key step in the implementation of the Distributed Renewable Resources Generation (DRRG) programme to reduce demand and achieve energy efficiency and operational improvement. This will contribute to DEWA’s sustainable growth and reduces Dubai's carbon footprint.

“We were pleased to see one of the most important initiatives, the Smart Grid, recognised in this ceremony. This award serves as a proof that Dubai is on the right track to raise the quality of its services to international levels, and that it is in line with the vision of the Government of Dubai. The smart grid strategy contains nine programmes that will be completed over the short-, medium- and long-term, between 2014 and 2035. These programmes are Advanced Metering Infrastructure, Asset Management, Demand Side Management & Demand Response, Distribution Automation, Information Technology Infrastructure, Systems Integration, Telecommunications, and Big Data and Analytics,” said Waleed Salman, EVP of Strategy and Business Development at DEWA.
