Dubai - MENA Herald:

Borouge and Borealis, world leaders in advanced polyolefins, showcase an enhanced portfolio of solutions for power transmission, distribution, renewable energy and telecommunications applications at the Middle East Electricity (MEE) 2019 held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 5-7 March 2019.

AN EXPANDED WORLD CLASS PORTFOLIO

Borouge’s commitment to the industry was supported by the completion and commissioning of Borouge 3 complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, in 2016. The company has since expanded its portfolio to include two additional products, Borlink™ LS4201H for high voltage applications and Visico™ for low voltage applications. Both products are produced in Borouge’s state-of-the-art XLPE plant in Ruwais.

TAILORED SOLUTIONS FOR GREATER FLEXIBILITY

While the global wire and cable industry has traditionally recognised voltage as the defining standard for power cables, utilities are increasingly seeking more compact cable solutions, with a shift in focus from design to function. To cater to this new approach, Borouge has embarked on the production of XLPE solutions that are designed not only for defined voltages, but also for maximum operating stresses.

“As a reliable partner to the wire and cable industry, we are glad to participate at the Middle East Electricity exhibition to engage our customers in this region and introduce them to our latest products tailored to meeting the evolving needs of the global energy industry,” said Ahmed Al Shamsi, Senior Vice President Regional MEAE at Borouge. “We continue to provide solutions that push boundaries and create value to our business partners. By enhancing our production assets through ongoing investments, expanding our offerings and actively engaging the entire energy value chain, we can offer a comprehensive portfolio of tailored solutions on a truly global scale.”

The new Borlink™ LS4201H insulation compound is designed for high-voltage (HV cables) of up to 161kV with a maximum operating stress of 7kV/mm, complementing the existing Borlink™ LS4201S, which is intended for power cables of up to 230kV and a maximum operating stress of 10kV/mm. Produced under superior cleanliness levels synonymous with the propriety Borlink™ technology, Borouge is now able to offer an extended range of tailored cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) solutions with varying cleanliness specifications, giving producers greater flexibility of design to meet the specific functional requirements of their products.

Developed on Borlink™ technology with cutting-edge low-scorch base resin, Borlink™ LS4201H features the benefits of superior scorch security and reliability for long production campaigns and a reduced degassing burden. Cables produced with LS4201H are also fully type tested to the IEC 60840 international standard, demonstrating the consistency and robustness of Borouge XLPE solutions under the most challenging of test conditions.

“With the new differentiated products we provide to the energy industry we are more capable of providing our customers with the solutions they require to improve their production and cable offerings,” said Jong Susilo William, Vice President Marketing Centre Energy, Borouge. “We will continue to provide the local and regional markets with sustainable solutions that create value through their optimal processing characteristics, minimal maintenance requirements, lower installation costs, longer product lifetimes and increased safety.”

IMPROVING SUPPLY RELIABILITY

Borouge’s investment in Visico™ production capacity will boost its ability to bring low voltage solutions to customers in the Middle East.

“We take our global commitment to long-term investments in our proprietary technology and expertise extremely serious, and we intend to build on our long and stellar track record in wire and cable,” promises Bart Verheule, Borealis Head of Marketing, Energy. “Our customers worldwide know that they can rely on us to maintain our technology leadership in the most demanding segments of the industry, now and in future.”

Visico™ delivers the following benefits to cable makers:

  • Enhanced scorch performance for longer production runs, leading to higher output and reduced scrap.
  • Visico™ is a reactor-based compound and as such, brings greater material consistency as compared to compounded and blended products.
  • A simplified material handling process; the system utilises only two compounds as compared to those of standard low voltage polyethylene solutions, which are based on multiple components.
  • Ambient curing system that removes the need for forced during in steam or hot water baths, leading to lower energy costs and subsequently, a lower carbon footprint.

VALUE ADDING SOLUTIONS THAT SUPPORT CABLE RELIABILITY

Increasing urbanisation across many parts of the Middle East has led to a greater demand for quality, value added solutions that support cable reliability.

In this area, polyethylene solutions like Visico™ are a viable alternative to PVC due to the following:

  • High durability critical to the reliability and longevity of underground cables.
  • Strong resistance to abrasion, impact and moisture.
  • Free of toxic compounds and hence, safe for the environment.
  • Enables greater cost effectiveness in production by increasing line speed through higher extrusion outputs.
