In response to the invitation of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to participate in the Well of Hope Competition, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, announced that DEWA will support the initiative by digging 20 wells in drought-affected areas in 7 countries. These are Bangladesh, Benin, Brazil, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Tajikistan. Hundreds of DEWA staff, headed by Al Tayer and DEWA’s Executive Vice Presidents and Vice Presidents, also took part in pumping and filling hundreds of water bottles through the competition’s virtual interactive pumping device that DEWA hosted today.
Al Tayer expressed his pride in DEWA being one of the first organisations to participate in the competition. “The humanitarian initiatives launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, affirm the UAE’s global position as a beacon of humanity and an oasis for charity and humanitarian work, extending a helping hand to the needy everywhere regardless of religion, colour, or race. This continues the approach of our Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace. We are honoured to accept the invitation by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum to participate in the Well of Hope initiative, which promotes positive and constructive competition to provide drinking water to the needy. This translates the vision of His Highness in doing good deeds and giving hope, regionally and globally, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan, which promotes the values of giving, generosity, and helping the needy,” said Al Tayer.
Al Tayer commended the wide participation of DEWA’s staff in this competition, noting that they are keen to participate in various humanitarian and voluntary initiatives in the UAE and abroad. The staff expressed their delight at being able to participate in this pioneering initiative, and contribute to provide drinking water to the needy in areas with poor access to potable water.
To instil the spirit of giving and volunteering among the younger generation especially during the Holy Month of Ramada, DEWA’s childcare centres, including the children’s mothers, took part in pumping water through the virtual device.
The Well of Hope Competition aims to involve society members in charitable work by donating water and delivering it to areas that suffer from shortages of drinking water. Public and private sector employees compete to pump the largest amount of water through a mobile virtual interactive pumping device. In turn, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives will donate the total amount of water pumped into the machine to the less fortunate around the world.
