UAE Signs MoU on Environmental Conservation and Climate Change with Singapore

Dubai - MENA Herald: The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) and the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources of Singapore have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote cooperation between the two countries and their agencies in the areas of environmental conservation, climate change and sustainable development.

His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and His Excellency Masagos Zulkifli, Singaporean Minister of Environment and Water, signed the five-year agreement on the sidelines of the fifth World Government Summit that runs in Dubai from February 12 to 14.

The MoU focuses on capacity building, monitoring and reducing environmental impact of a diverse range of factors, developing innovative solutions to pressing challenges, engaging the youth and the private sector, and raising awareness among the public. Under its terms, the two parties will share experience and best practices, exchange information, arrange visits by experts, and organize meetings and workshops.

His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi said: “The MoU is in line with the strategy of the federal government and the UAE Vision 2021. Our two countries are keen to strengthen our strategic partnership and unify our efforts in the areas that fall under the remit of our ministries. I am confident this agreement will elevate our relations to a whole new level.”

He added: “The UAE appreciates Singapore’s proactive attitude towards issues of global concern, especially climate change and environmental protection. We support its efforts to be one of the most forward-thinking countries on the issue of sustainable development, and the whole world admires its achievements in the field of marine conservation.”

For his part, His Excellency Masagos Zulkifli praised the drive of the UAE to combat climate change, its move towards clean and sustainable energy, and its commitment to achieving a bright future for the next generations. Furthermore, he commended the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment on its cooperation with the international community in reducing carbon emissions.

The ministries will appoint a joint working committee to carry out the objectives of the MoU and report on the progress. The committee will develop a plan of action (PoA) outlining the initial cooperative projects to be pursued. In their efforts, the two parties will collaborate with other strategic partners including government and non-government agencies, research institutions and private companies.
