Dubai - MENA Herald: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has published its third annual Sustainability Report 2015, as part of its strategy to enhance the competitiveness of the Emirate by transforming Dubai into a global hub for sustainability and green economy.
“We are working to achieve the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to promote the sustainable development of the Emirate. We are pleased to launch the third annual Sustainability Report, which is published by DEWA to inform stakeholders about DEWA’s current efforts in sustainability, which is an integral part of our vision. We continue to integrate the concept of sustainability in all our operations, to achieve DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility.
The report emphasises our commitment to operating at the highest international standards, to establish sustainable development economically, socially, and environmentally. This supports our efforts to establish a brighter future for generations to come,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“The main objective behind the Sustainability Report is to inform all relevant organisations and stakeholders about DEWA’s latest developments in sustainability. The report focuses on areas relating to sustainable development, economic development, customers, energy and climate change, water, environmental preservation, employees, and society as a whole. The report also highlights DEWA’s most important achievements in economic, social, and environmental development,” said Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at DEWA.
Mohammed Abdulkareem Al Shamsi, Senior Manager of Climate Change & Sustainability at DEWA, noted that the report was developed in compliance with the framework of the Global Reporting Initiative- Sustainability Reporting G4 Guidelines. The guidelines include specific criteria that organisations around the world follow when issuing reports. DEWA’s third annual Sustainability Report was audited by a third party, in accordance with the international Assurance standard ISAE 3000.
The Global Reporting Initiative is an independent non-profit international organisation, that oversees the issuing of sustainability reports, which include social, environmental and economic performance information, and helps companies, governments, and other organisations better understand the issues and themes of sustainability.
DEWA is the first organisation in the region to use GRI, to develop sustainability reports focused on the electricity sector. In 2014, DEWA was also among the first 15 organisations in the UAE to issue a report using the GRI G4 Guidelines, and is one of the 55 international service organisations in the electricity sector that issue reports on sustainability in accordance with these standards. DEWA promotes sustainable development among the Emirate’s environmental, social, economic, community service, and energy and water sectors.
