Launch of Warehouse421 welcomes 10,000 visitors from the UAE to Mina Zayed

Wednesday 25 November 2015

Abu Dhabi - MENA Herald: Following a successful launch held from 19-21 November, Warehouse421 is officially Abu Dhabi’s newest arts and cultural destination. Ten thousand visitors from around the UAE and the region took part in the 3-day opening festivities. Warehouse421 aims to support the growth and celebration of the art and culture sector within Abu Dhabi while making art accessible for the broader public.

Located in the historic Mina Zayed district and designed by Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Warehouse421 - a converted and now multipurpose venue – presents a programme of art, design and creativity, together with the tradition and history of Abu Dhabi and the UAE creating a space for the community to experience all aspects of culture in a unique and original space. The launch of Warehouse421 falls in line with the vision of the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation which invests in the future of the UAE’s people through art and cultural initiatives.

“Given the overwhelmingly positive response from this weekend’s launch, Warehouse421 will continue to be a dedicated venue for the Abu Dhabi community, which aims to continue to encourage and engage the public with art and culture. Its location in the port invokes ideals of national history and tradition, and Warehouse421 will soon introduce a diverse programme of workshops, talks, screenings and performances amongst other activities, that will support the ongoing and upcoming exhibitions throughout the year which uphold the culture of the UAE,” said Faisal Al Hassan, the Foundation’s Progamming Manager.

The opening weekend featured a diverse programme of interactive workshops, developed and led by art and design professionals, to provide engaging and educational experiences as well as greater insight into the creative process. The Creative Market, a curated selection of jewelry, crafts, accessories, and design pieces, celebrated 22 regional and international designers. Visitors also experienced four curated exhibitions which explored the ideals of memory and transformation with Lest We Forget: Emirati Family Photographs 1950-1999, Mina Zayed: Through The Lens of Jack Burlot, 1:100 The Warehouse Reimagined, as well as Art: Process & Practice, which presented a selection of works from the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship program, that are all ongoing until 2016.
